ILLUMINATIONS

March 12th and 13th, 2010 - Edmonton Ski Club (9613-96 Ave)
Fri 12-9:30pm, Sat 2-9:30pm

Lights, cameras… action! Illuminations brings together dazzling fire performances, and spectacular freestyle at the Edmonton Ski Club. Snow activities include everyone, with skiing, Zipfys on Kid Mountain, and the ride of your life on the world’s largest Dragon Luge! Media projections and sparkling pyrotechnics will light up the night at Winter Light’s closing event.

Illuminations is the final event of Edmonton’s winter season and a two-day extravaganza of recreation, art and spectacle.

During Illuminations, explore the fun of one of Edmonton’s best-kept winter secrets – the snow covered hills of the Edmonton Ski Club (9613-96 Ave). In the midst of our amazing river city, they’ve got skiing, boarding, moguls, freestyle terrain, and sledding. Courtesy of the ESC, skiing and boarding will be free during Illuminations.

Winter Light will light up the night with lantern installations, media art, special effects, and show biz spectacle!

Enjoy hospitality, music and activity in the tipis, tents and ESC Lounge.

SPECIAL EVENTS

"Dialogue"  (Fri & Sat Evenings)
Interactive Light by Will Bauer

Winter Light is proud to present a specially commissioned interactive media artwork by Edmonton artist Will Bauer.

Dialogue speaks to the landscape, the quality of light, and the thoughts and inspirations born of this place.

The audience will see video projections on the snowy hills of the river valley - images of the seasonal aspects of the river and our natural environment.  Overlaid upon these images are words and text, which seem to swim and live within the image, crawling and sliding around with a certain natural agency.

You can participate in Dialogue!  Step up to the podium and interact with the video projections - by choosing a word you see swimming on the image and speaking it aloud into the mic, you can capture words with your voice, stringing them together along the bottom of the image to form lines of a short, multi-line poem.

Flashpoint  (Friday at 9 pm - big air warm up at 8 pm)

Winter Light and Freestyle Alberta are celebrating the creative edge of big air with an action packed demo. There will be music, commentary and a party atmosphere, and photographers will be there to record all the action.

Skiers and photographers will compete for prizes for technique, creativity and the best "Flashpoint" captured.

Artist Ian Jackson will create an original media mix of images that shows the magical combination of physical skill, art and lights on the snow.

Rocket Sled Across the North Saskatchewan  (Saturday at 9 pm)

Captain Zoom has confirmed his intention to make history with his epic and dangerous stunt Rocket Sled Across the North Saskatchewan.

Captain Zoom is out to honour the daredevil reputation and gonzo traditions of the Edmonton Ski Club, which next year celebrates its 100th anniversary. Captain Zoom credits his audacious courage on the hills to the daring stunts he witnessed as a boy – like the ‘ring of fire’ demonstrations, and of course the historic Connor’s Road Ski Ramp and the ‘visionaries’ who dared the jump.

Now a well-known personality in luge and snow circles as an ‘athlete with edge’, Captain Zoom returns from recent glories to his hometown of Edmonton to drop an epic stunt into snow hill history. His identity will be a closely guarded secret until after the Rocket Sled stunt.
