STAR PARTY

March 6th, 2010 - Elk Island National Park  4-10pm

BREAKING NEWS (email) FROM OUR ENVIRONMENT CANADA ASTRONOMER/ METEOROLOGIST FRIEND

Subject: [Astro] Fantastic seeing Sat night

We're right under a vertical column of light winds, all the way up, so tonight's seeing for the planets should be out of this world!

Collimate and crank it up!

See you out at Elk Island,

Alister.

See the stars!

The night sky in Elk Island National Park is surely a natural treasure.

A ‘dark sky’ preserve, this beautiful park allows us a true experience of winter night - a night that shows the same sky people have been viewing for thousands of years.

Gathering at Astotin Lake, the Star Party offers lots to do for kids, families, casual sky gazers and serious star watchers. (All viewing weather dependent)

Bring the kids early – family friendly activities include Sky Viewing; Aboriginal story telling; Constellation Crafts; Snow Mountain; Solar System Snow Play – plus the brand new Star Party Zipfy Hill!

The evening is truly an astronomical viewing buffet. Dozens of telescopes are set up and ready to go courtesy of amazing volunteer astronomers. Special guests give presentations and talks on celestial subjects. There is music and media in the Golf Club ‘Star Lounge’.

H. Q. WELCOME TENT, INFORMATION, HOT CHOCOLATE

The shuttles will drop you off near the Winter Light Welcome Tent. (on the north side of the Astotin Lake parking lot.)

The Welcome Tent is the place to stop by for information, hot chocolate, and a chance to warm up near the fire!

FUN THINGS TO DO

Bring a kite, or help light up a kite to fly over the lake!

Walk the Red Lantern Parade with Dylan Toymaker. (Winds up at a Light Garden).

Bring your camera and practice your night/star photography in a workshop with an expert.

Rent snowshoes ($10, at Golf Course)

COMMON SENSE PRECAUTIONS

Elk Island National Park is a natural preserve – not just a walk in the park. Please observe park protocols. Take away all that you bring in. Watch out for wild life.

Dress warmly head to toe! (Bringing extra warm socks and clothing highly recommended.)

Watch out for bison. They are mostly indifferent to people – but they are very unpredictable! Walk or drive around them. Do not feed or provoke bison.

LIGHTS DOWN

To properly view the night sky, the human eye needs time to adapt. Too much white light disrupts this process. Red light is the least intrusive light for optimum night vision.

Please plan to put red paper or plastic over your flashlight.

Once you have entered the parking area near the Astotin Lake, please use parking lights only, or put red paper or plastic over your headlights. Whenever possible keep car lights pointed away from Lake. Please do not leave cars running.

FIRES

Gather around and stay warm. Our trusty fire tenders will keep the flame bright. Please do not put anything in the fires without asking.
