FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Winter Light presents Snow Daze at Snow Valley
Snow Valley Ski Hill & Whitemud Park North
2 PM to 9 PM, Friday, January 30th, 2009
featuring The Baba Yaga Trail Adventure from 6 PM - 9 PM

Winter Light is serving up a full-menu of ‘snow party’ fun, Friday, January 30 at Snow Valley ski hill and the nearby Whitemud Park. The main festival site will be the Winter Light Gathering Area, with lanterns, music, sleigh rides, hot chocolate, and fire sculpture!

In the afternoon, people can enjoy free ski hill access and an evening cross country ski (including lift tickets, equipment rental and instruction). There will be sledding and all kinds of down hill fun on offer.  Experienced winter athletes will be on site, and the festival will feature Big Air, a showcase of free¬style skiing. There is a 6 K Fun Run for the Light, and a variety of special winter recreation opportunities for all ages.

Snow Daze at Snow Valley carries on into the evening with The Baba Yaga Trail Adventure – a storybook adventure along a beautiful 2 K section of Whitemud Park.  Follow Vasillisa’s path into the woods, encounter suprises along the trail, and get the winter light from Baba Yaga’s house!

Winter Light will also offer warming tents and tipis, free hot chocolate, music, lantern installations, sleigh rides - and a few winter surprises.

Other information:

The Friday event takes advantage of a school "PD" day, when lots of students and families are looking for fun things to do.  It's a hybrid event meant to appeal to a broad crowd. Skiers, snow boarders, and xc skiers can enjoy Snow Valley in the afternoon. And curious walkers can check out the Baba Yaga Trail Adventure in the evening.

Access to Snow Valley and the Baba Yaga Trail Adventure either by Edmonton Transit (Route 599) or by driving to the designated Winter Light lot, across the creek, just east of Snow Valley at 119 Street and the Whitemud Freeway. Jump onto one of the horse-drawn sleighs which will take you to the trail head, where the adventure begins. Please note there is traffic congestion in this area - car pool if you can.

Free Ski Hill Access, Rentals, and Workshops will take place from 2-5 PM at Snow Valley –access to lift tickets is limited, so please register in advance at www.winterlight.ca.   An Introduction to Cross Country Skiing (5-9 PM) and "Big Air" Freestyle Ski Demonstration take place at Snow Valley (8-9 PM).

Free Tobogganing is offered up at Whitemud Park North (13204 Fox Drive), from 3-9 PM, where Winter Light staff will be tending warming fires and providing an assortment of toboggans and sleighs for the public to try.

A 6 K "Fun Run for the Light" begins at Snow Valley at 5 PM and follows the Baba Yaga Trail.  Run or hike through the trails from Snow Valley to Whitemud Park, guided by low voltage LED lights, handmade lanterns and warming fires.
