The Silver Skate Festival is the best known and longest running outdoor winter festival in Edmonton. Festival programming is broad in appeal, coming together in a winter extravaganza of sport, art, and culture, with activities for all ages and lifestyles. Eight distinct areas of programming are featured at this year's festival, including the Opening Ceremonies & Media Launch at City Hall; the 25 km Skate Marathon; a Snow & Ice Sculpture Garden; Kortebaan sprint races; 2 days of Free Public Programming and an Interactive Family Area; the Edmonton Winter Triathlon; the 50 km Skate Marathon -  and a new event "24 Hours to Ignition", a fire sculpture competition hosted by Winter Light.

The main festival programming is held at Hawrelak Park: outside, nestled in the river valley; inside at the Hawrelak Park Pavilion. Opening ceremonies and a visual art exhibit will be featured at City Hall.

24 Hours to IGNITION:

The Fire Sculpture Competition
Saturday Feb 21, Hawrelak Park

(Sculpting- all day; Burn - 8:30 pm)

Winter Light is giving 6 artists a bundle of willow, straw, wood, 24 hours… and a match!  Creations and transformation come together in an ephemeral art form. And only the fire code can restrict their highly flammable imaginations.

See what they build, and see how they burn.

The IGNITORS

Virgilio Baz  (the Inflamer)
Randal Frazer (the Match)
Bob Mittlestat  (Slow Burn)
Yuri Lytviak (Pyro)
Memi VonGaza (Hot Coal)
Sue Hassay (the Spark)
